Tomato sauce is always classic on a burger, but for this delicious dinner we’ve combined two of our other faves; aioli and delicious caramelised onion jam. With plenty of cheese of course – this is a burger after all.

1 bag

1 bunch

2 unit
egg
(Contains: Eggs; )
2 tsp
brown sugar
olive oil
1.5 tbs
balsamic vinegar
1.5 tbs
warm water
½ tsp
salt

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Finely grate the garlic (or use a garlic press). Finely chop the parsley leaves. Thinly slice the brown onion. Thinly slice the tomato. Tear 1/2 the cos lettuce leaves in half. Shred the remaining cos lettuce.

In a large bowl, combine the fine breadcrumbs (see ingredients list), egg, garlic, parsley, salt (see ingredients list), beef mince and a pinch of pepper. Shape the beef mince mixture into 5 patties (each a little wider than the burger buns). TIP: Make a shallow indentation in the centre of each patty, this will help prevent it from puffing up as it cooks. Transfer to a plate.

In a large frying pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil over a medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until almost cooked through.

Transfer the cooked beef patties to an oven tray lined with baking paper and sprinkle with the shredded Cheddar cheese. Bake for 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Place the bake-at-home burger buns directly onto the wire racks and bake for 3 minutes or until heated through. Slice the buns in half.

While the cheese is melting, return the frying pan to a medium-high heat with a good drizzle of olive oil. Add the brown onion and cook, stirring, for 5-6 minutes, or until soft. Add the balsamic vinegar, warm water (see ingredients list) and brown sugar and simmer until the liquid is nearly evaporated and the mixture is slightly sticky. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Divide the burger buns between plates and spread the bases with garlic aioli. Top each with a cheesy beef patty, a spoonful of onion jam, a tomato slice and a torn cos letttuce leaf. Toss the remaining shredded cos lettuce with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper and serve on the side.
